‘The continuing lack of diversity in architecture is a problem for everyone’

David Chipperfield Architects joined the W Programme in 2017 in response to a need for increased diversity in the company and to address issues of representation in the industry. Designing buildings is a collaborative process and so it is crucial to have a plurality of voices – both internally and externally – that can fuel discussion, challenge ideas and ultimately improve the quality of work. The W Programme offers a platform where practices can exchange thoughts and share experiences in a supportive and encouraging environment and gain a broader understanding of the wider issues. We hope that this partnership will encourage applications to our practice from architects of all backgrounds.

‘The continuing lack of diversity in architecture is a problem for everyone: it limits the profession’s access to the best talent and inclusive design thinking. I strongly support our partnership with the W Programme and we are keen to prove that the practice’s partnership is not just symbolic but encourages more proactive changes in our workplace. We look forward to the day when we have a much healthier level of diversity of all kinds in the profession.’
